MEMBERS have been entertained by a number of excellent speakers recently.

They started the month with Joan Weston from Pontrhydfendigaid, an artist, quilter and photographer. She had brought along a case full of quilts of various sizes and explained what they were about.

She has spent her lifetime with textiles, and as well as traditional quilting she likes to paint some of her quilts.

Some ideas for her quilts had come from the paintings of famous artists such as Monet.

She is well-travelled and has used the influence of the various continents she has visited in her quilts.

The next speaker was Anthony Vaughan, Ceredigion project manager for the Wallich charity.

This is a charity set up in Cardiff in 1978 to help the homeless and the need has increased considerably over the years. The people who require help mainly have problems with mental health, alcohol, drugs or release after a long term in prison.

They have houses in the county to help with accommodation for those who seek it.

Donald Morgan, the florist from Llanrhystud, came along the following week and made three beautiful floral displays.

The first one was on a silver stand and full of flowers and foliage called Garden’s Delight. The second was on an iron stand with two displays using the same flowers and was called Spring Into Action. The third he had put in a cube and called Box of Tricks.

Donald gave members several tips on watering the oasis and cutting and conditioning flowers.

Hazel Rimmer, the president, thanked Donald for coming along and for his humorous repartee.

The flowers were raffled and the lucky winners were Maureen Edwards, Carol Evans, Betty Wakelin, Janet Parry, while Cynthia Wainwright won the weekly raffle.

At the end of April the group visited the National Library of Wales to see the Kyffin Williams exhibition.

They were welcomed by Lona Mason who has responsibility for the collection. Sian Bowyer, who has catalogued the collection, was also present.

They then guided the group around the exhibition of the artist’s works.

Hazel then thanked them for what was a very interesting afternoon.
