History society
THE theme of this year’s exhibit at the Llanon Carnival on 3 August was Morfa Esgob.
The display included photographs, posters, maps and tithe schedules.
Louise Austin visited the society on 5 August to talk on the Tywi Gateway Project underway in the grounds of the old Bishop’s Palace, Abergwili on the eastern side of Carmarthen.
Forty-eight bishops were resident there from the 16th century well into the 20th century.
Louise outlined significant aspects of their careers, paying particular attention to those who made changes to the landscaping of the grounds.
The project is working to restore features as they were in the last remodelling.
There is a chance to see how work is progressing at the Open Doors day on 21 September between 10am and 4pm.
On Sunday, 11 August, Dr Stephen Briggs led a walk along Llanrhystud beach to the Lime kilns at Llanon.
He pointed out notable geological and archaeological features including positions of a lost boundary stone and a hidden walkway.
The walk was an introduction to the talk he will give at the society meeting in November.
Phil and Lindsay Davies will be the guest speakers at the meeting on 2 September at 7.30pm in the Reading Room.
The subject of their talk is ‘Ron Davies Photographer’.
