Garden Club
THERE were 23 members present at the club’s June meeting, warmly welcomed by the chairperson, apologies were received from two others.
Recipients of donations of £100 each, raised from the plant sale, were awarded to five local charities.
The speaker for the evening lived locally, Heidi Wilkes is a physiotherapist who qualified in 2004 and specialises in treating upper limbs.
Though gardening is looked upon as a ‘fun’ and gentle occupation, it can be the cause of many musculoskeletal problems, and Heidi talked them through ways of treat and easing aches and pains, strains and sprains, and when a doctor should be consulted.
Simple guidelines like five to 10-minute warm-up exercises; bending the knees but keeping the back straight when lifting; limiting tasks to 20 minute slots before changing to another allays repetitive strain; even consider changing garden layout to need less maintenance.
Always cease work before pain sets in.
A vote of thanks was given to Heidi by Valerie Dyer for all her good and helpful advice.
Refreshments were then served.
