Mach Maethlon
CONTINUING their popular cooking sessions at the Bowling Club on 12 July, Mach Maethlon welcomed Maryam to demonstrate the art of making a traditional Persian saffron rice with tadik, and a side of Shirazi-style salad.
These sessions are free and all are most welcome to attend.
Artist’s charity exhibitions
LOCAL artist Jane Hibbert of Derwenlas wishes it to be known that, even at 95 years young, she is still very prolific.
Many local people will be aware of Jane’s work over the years, much of which has been seen in Y Tabernacl.
Her latest project involves paintings on slates and ceramic tiles and is being put on to aid the funds of Wales Air Ambulance.
Jane has expressed her gratitude to everyone that has donated their spare tiles to her to aid the venture.
A member of the Cambrian Art Society, Jane’s first showing will be at their exhibition scheduled for Wednesday, 22 August, at St Peter’s church hall.
A second chance to view, “and hopefully purchase”, some of her work will be at the annual charity sale held at Y Plas in November.
She says she is happy to support so worthy a cause, and for the November show she has built her own collection box.
Civic Society
IMMEDIATELY following the AGM, Machynlleth and District Civic Society held its first executive committee meeting of the new 2018/19 term of office.
The chair, Margaret Vince, welcomed all present and invited secretary/treasurer Rab Jones to take members through the formal business.
Following presentation of the bi-monthly accounts, which members received with thanks, the committee considered a number of items, including information that a decision was still awaited from Welsh Government as to a start date for the proposed new Dyfi Bridge and associated works.
The county council’s consultation on the preferred site for a new cemetery has shown that there was general support for a new site adjacent to the grounds of Y Plas.
A new shelter has been installed on platform one at the town’s railway station. The old wooden shelter to be refurbished.
Members were full of praise for the excellent new toilets.
The Royal Welsh Fusiliers (RWF) were in the process of developing a World War One memorial garden within the Rose Garden at Y Plas.
It was agreed that, together with the secretary/treasurer, Carol Handcock and Michael Williams would be signatories on a new bank mandate.
Speaking a few days after the meeting, chair Margaret Vince said: “We were all greatly saddened at the news of the death of our vice-president, Richard Lambert. Richard was a member for over 30 years and an inspiration to all. He dedicated his life to the community through many projects such as the Tabernacle Museum of Modern Art, Royal House, Civic Society and the church to name but a few. Richard will live in the hearts and minds of all that new him. He truly was ‘a man of the people’.”
Ras yr Iaith
THE Machynlleth leg of Ras yr Iaith 2018 was held on 4 July, with over 70 Individuals, families, schools, businesses and clubs from all over Montgomeryshire taking part or supporting the event.
The event convoy was welcomed into Machynlleth at 4.30pm with the baton being passed from the infamous Dewi Pws to local celebrity Aeron Pughe.
The run was then officially started by mayor of Machynlleth, Richie Gaskell.

Bowls
MACHYNLLETH’S Andrew Fleming, now in his 20th year as a seasoned Welsh international, was part of Wales’ 26-man squad that lifted the British Isles Bowls International trophy at Leamington Spa recently.
Wales defeated Ireland (119-107) and Scotland (136-90) and, although they lost to England (107-128), Wales (+37 shots) were crowned champions on shots difference from England (+3), leaving Ireland and Scotland trailing in 3rd and 4th place respectively.
Andrew played as third in the four skippered by Steve Harris and the four achieved the distinction of winning all three games: against Ireland (28-16), Scotland (28-11) and England (23-20).
Machynlleth completed a tough and thrilling four-shot victory at Kerry in division one of the Montgomeryshire County League on Thursday, 5 July.
Last year’s champions and current leaders, securing five of the seven league points.
Maglona (one point) slipped to a 39-shot defeat at home to highflying Montgomery in division two.
Meanwhile, in the Montgomeryshire County Ladies’ League, Machynlleth ladies strengthened their third-place with a resounding nine points to nil victory away to Newtown ladies on 3 July.
