THE latest community news from Machynlleth

Garden club

MACHYNLLETH and District Garden Club would like to thank all the members of the community and visitors who supported our recent plant sale.

The next meeting will be at 7.30pm on Tuesday, 4 June, at the bowling club, when they will have the re-arranged talk by Peter Styles on ‘Life at Kew Gardens’.

Campfire club

THIS June, Campfire Club is coming to Machynlleth for the first time.

For over five years, Campfire Club has been the way for Londoners to gather in beautiful green spaces and listen to amazing music by artists from all over the world. They come together in the simple way that people have done for thousands of years; around the fire with food, drink, music and each other. The performances are unamplified, allowing you to get up close and personal and hear the artists’ music in a very intimate way.

Sam Lee offers up incredibly beautiful and traditional English folk with mature artisanal tracks, which echo tapestries and folklore tales of past. A free spirit runs through his accompaniments, with an eclectic and exotic mix of instruments orchestrating the magic, with Lee himself taking to the helm not only with vocals but playing the Jews harp and shruti box. Following being nominated for a Mercury award, Lee released his 2015 album ‘The Fade in Time’, named by The Guardian as one of the albums of the year for its “startling” originality.

Campfire Club Machynlleth dates: Wednesday, 5 June, Harri Endersby; Wednesday, 12 June, Sam Lee; Wednesday, 19 June, Alasdair Roberts; and Wednesday 26 June, Ye Vagabonds.

Bowls

MACHYNLLETH’S two Montgomeryshire County Men’s League teams made an uncertain start to this season’s league and cup campaigns, with both teams losing their league cup 1st round 1st leg ties.

In the first division of the county league on May 16, Machynlleth bounced back at home to beat Llanidloes by 18 shots, gaining five points to the visitors’ two. However, despite a close-fought match, Maglona (one point) suffered a 16-shot second-division defeat at Carno.
