Walkers

THE walk on Saturday, 19 August, led by Morlais Davies, was a six-mile circular walk at Dinas Island, north Pembrokeshire.

Twenty-one people and two dogs met at Pwllgwaelod on a beautifully sunny windy day and set off on the initial inland section walking on green footpaths through Bryn-henllan and Tai Bach reaching the coast near Ynys Dôl-rhedyn.

On the way, Cwm Dewi could be clearly seen, a marshy valley between Cwmyreglwys and Pwllgwaelod formed by melting glacial ice.

Following the coast path, lunch was taken beside the iconic church ruins at Cwmyreglwys. The fifteenth century church, of which only the western wall and belfrey survive, destroyed along with nearby cottages and the quay in the ferocious Royal Charter storm of 1859.

The walk continued around Dinas Head (Pen y Fan) with a climb to the top at almost 470 feet with brilliant views of Newport and Fishguard Bays and inland to the Preselis then an easy descent to Pwllgwaelod and refreshments at the Sailors Safety pub.

Next walk: Saturday, 9 September, again on the north Pembrokeshire coast, visits Strumble Head, Pwllderi and North Pole.

Meet at the Strumble Head lighthouse car park at 11am.

Later they visited the adjacent church and the beach, to capture a wonderful sunset, over New Quay.
