THE latest community news from around Newcastle Emlyn.
Party in the Park
THE Party in the Park held at the King George V Playing Fields raised over £1,000.
The first event of its kind, organised by the committee of the field, will see the money raised going towards the upkeep of the field and buying new play equipment.
“I was absolutely gobsmacked. It was a wonderful day and we had a great turnout,” said King George V Playing Fields secretary Vince Jones. “People were exceptionally generous, the weather was perfect and there were plenty of low-key things for children to do in a laid-back atmosphere.
“Thank you so much to all the businesses, shops and individuals who helped, but it wouldn’t have been possible without our amazing team of volunteers.
“We not only raised a good amount of money, but we also had a good number of people wanting to help out in the future and it would be great to have people with skills who can fix things.”
Cllr Maureen Webley was delighted with the amount raised, but said more was needed. “It takes £2,000 a year just to run the playing fields, with insurance in particular being very heavy,” she said.
“There’s also general maintenance and grass-cutting and some serious repair work is needed.
“New bits of equipment are also required and a skateboard ramp would be a good thing for the older children.”
The committee are now asking people to join them to help organise their next charity event – the fireworks display on Bonfire Night.
Gwesty’r Emlyn
PINK will be the colour of the day at Gwesty’r Emlyn next month with an exclusive pink-themed traditional afternoon tea to raise money for west Wales’ main breast cancer care unit at Llanelli’s Prince Philip Hospital.
The Think Pink Jazz and Afternoon Tea extravaganza will be held at Gwesty’r Emlyn on the afternoon of Saturday, 22 October, to start at 1.30pm
The event has been organised by the hotel’s proprietor, Anne Davies, under the auspices of The Ray Gravell and Friends Charitable Trust.
The afternoon will consist of a drink upon arrival at the hotel, full afternoon tea and entertainment by the fabulous jazz band Afternoon in Paris.
All proceeds will be donated to the breast cancer unit. The Trust is a staunch supporter of Prince Philip Hospital’s Breast Cancer Care Unit, having donated more than £50,000 to the world-class centre of excellence which is the main breast cancer care unit for women all over west Wales.
Gwesty’r Emlyn has held two previous Pretty in Pink evenings in aid of the unit, donating £10,000 to the unit through the Trust.
“If you like pink and you like cake, but more to the point if you like helping a great cause, come along to the Think Pink afternoon tea and have a great time as well as supporting a great cause,” Mrs Davies said.
