2018 was an active year for the St Anne’s branch. They were saddened to see the demise of two branches not far away, so the continued support of so many members, the arrival of new members, and renewed cooperation with other branches, has been very encouraging.
To summarise their year locally, they had a thoughtful address for Lent in March, talks on the Jubilee Food Bank, and on Tir Dewi, a personal account of one life drawn to the ministry, reports from the 2018 World General Meeting of the MU in Swansea, a detailed talk on his work with the Fire Service from the chief Community Safety Officer, and an inspiring Advent address from the Rev Heather Evans.
In the middle of this, in June, 18 members enjoyed a trip to ‘Byd Mari Jones World’ near Bala. Mari was the girl who walked 26 miles barefoot to obtain a Bible from the Rev Thomas Charles. He was so inspired by the strength of her need that he became the force behind the foundation of the British and Foreign Bible Society in 1804, and Mari Jones became a national icon in Welsh non-conformism.
Their year was brought to its usual delightful close by a joint gathering with other members at Ysbyty Cynfyn church, to admire their display, and enjoy a service of carols and readings by members, with delicious cawl and treats afterwards.
It’s so easy to think of one’s branch as the ‘main’ activity, but MU means so much more. MU has around 4 million members in 84 countries. They are part of a global movement inspired by ideals of service and mutual support on a Christian foundation.
The branch meets in St Anne’s Church Hall on the first Wednesday of the month at 11am, and everyone is welcome.
