Environment and climate hustings
THERE was a packed environment and climate meeting at Plas Heli on Tuesday evening, 3 December, as over 70 members of the public prepared to grill prospective parliamentary candidates.
The hustings meeting had been organised by the Extinction Rebellion Pen Ll?n group to give Dwyfor Meirionnydd candidates the opportunity to explain their positions and policies.
Gwynedd Council declared a climate emergency in March, closely followed by the UK Parliament at the start of May, and at the end of November the Centre for Alternative Technology, at Machynlleth, launched its detailed Zero Carbon Britain publication.
Chaired by Michael Chown, a long-time resident of the Ll?n, he began by suggesting Wales had shown vision decades earlier by treating the environment as an integral part of society and went on to suggest Wales could now show world leadership in how it responded to the climate emergency.
He introduced the candidates, Liz Saville Roberts for Plaid Cymru and Graham Hogg for Labour.
Unfortunately, Louise Hughes for Plaid Brexit gave her apologies due to illness and Tomos Davies, for the Conservatives, who had been invited 10 days before but was otherwise engaged.
In response to questions on the current economic system, both candidates referred to the need for societal change.
Mr Hogg spoke of Labour’s ‘Green New Deal’, moving jobs into new industries and changes in agricultural subsidies to help farmers, and Mrs Saville Roberts recognised the need for a shift in our values while referring to the excesses of capitalism and its short-termism.
To a question about whether the public should be told the truth about climate change.
Mr Hogg was most explicit that the aim should be to not scare the public.
One distinction between the two candidates concerned nuclear power.
Mr Hogg was firmly of the view that nuclear should not be pursued. And although Ms Saville Roberts had long ago attended the Greenham Common protests, she took a more pragmatic line in that we needed to exploit existing lowcarbon electricity sources for the energy transition.
The meeting had a Welsh and English interpretation service and closed after two hours.
