Rotary Club
THE Rotary Club of Tywyn were delighted to welcome Brian Palmer from the Woodland Trust to their regular Thursday meeting to give a fascinating presentation on the work of the Trust.
The Trust are the country’s largest woodland conservation charity with over 500,000 members and supporters and more than 1,200 woodland sites with 41 million trees, covering over 26,000 hectares, throughout the UK.
With the aid of excellent illustrative slides, Brian showed how the woodlands we see today evolved from the way they were managed over hundreds of years.
The techniques of pollarding, coppicing and hedge laying, producing the rich and varied woodland scenery with its magnificent specimen trees that we see today.
The Trust protect, campaign, plant trees, and restore ancient woodland for the benefit of wildlife and people and it is their main objective to rekindle people’s love for woods and trees and demonstrate the benefits that trees can bring to lives and communities.
On behalf of The Rotary Club of Tywyn, president Nancy Clarke expressed her thanks to Brian for his presentation and as is the custom with all the speakers, Nancy presented Brian with a cheque for £100 for his nominated charity.
Garden Club
THE AGM was held in Tywyn Baptist Church on Tuesday, 14 May.
Chairman Margaret Evans welcomed 19 members.
Donations have been given to Tywyn Council for a flower tub.
A £25 subscription is given to Merionnedd Horticultural Society and a gift was also given to Peggy Griffiths on her 90th birthday to honour her past long service to the club.
The chairman gave her report.
Margaret thanked all members and the committee for the dedicated help and support given throughout the season.
Thanking Miss Yeomans in particular for her background work finding speakers, and for organising small outings, and the annual meal, also “what to do in the garden each month” leaflets.
Janet Handcock and Penny Horton had resigned from the committee during the year due to family commitments.
Susanna Yeomans resigned as secretary, but will remain an official as programme secretary.
Margaret Evans, Ann Malin, and Cath Chapman were elected to stay in office.
Quentin Deakin will become vice chairman.
Mr and Mrs Harrison were elected to join the committee as joint secretaries. Dr David Church remains on the committee.
The AGM finished with a short business meeting, followed by a bring and share supper. In a downpour of rain 10 members enjoyed seeing the Bonsai trees in Jony Easterby’s garden on 4 June.
Members will visit Grandma’s Garden on 11 June by car.
The annual garden club outing by coach is to The Hall at AbbeyCwm-Hir on Tuesday, 9 July.
It will start from Tywyn Co-op at 9am.
