Inner Wheel Club

CLUB president Meg Jones welcomed the members and three guests to her first meeting held recently in the Talyllyn Railway Restaurant.

President Meg thanked the ladies for all their hard work providing the catering for the Rotary Club’s successful Race the Train event held in August.

The club would like to thank all their friends and families who volunteered to help on the day in lots of ways, making the event possible and successful yet again.

Thank you all very much, diolch yn fawr.

It was a great pleasure for the president to welcome and enrol the newest member of the club, Muriel Lycett, presenting her with a badge.

Following the popular Strawberry Tea which was held in late June in the Abbeyfield Home, it was voted to send £300 to the North West Cancer Research which was past president Mair Worsey’s charity for the past year.

The club was delighted in August prior to Race the Train to receive a wooden garden bench presented to us as a gift from Williams – Homes of Bala. In turn members were very pleased to donate the super bench to Llys Meuric – Abbeyfield Home (see photo, right).

During the September meeting it was voted to donate to the following charities:

Riding for the disabled in Arthog which is our Association President’s charity for 2019/20 - £150;

Mango Tree our Inner Wheel International Charity - £200;

Bethel Chapel, Tywyn £100 (in thanks for storage space during the year);

RNLI Aberdyfi branch - £50, the club speaker Sandy Andrew’s charity.

Following the buffet supper president Meg welcomed the speaker for the evening, Sandy Andrews, who spoke to members about the importance of keeping active for senior ladies and she demonstrated several exercises to encourage ‘Strength and Balance’. On thanking Sandy, president Meg presented her with a cheque of £50 for the RNLI Aberdyfi branch.

The club officers for 2019/20 are the following: president Meg Jones, vice president Sian Bell, treasurer Marjory Watmore, secretary Mair Worsey, minutes secretary Lynda Morris, international service Jane Pearson, club correspondent Jose Price, social secretary Win Bottrill, community Triena Hawkes, speaker secretary Marie Owens, health and safety Chrissie Glaze.

Hearing aid clinic

THE next session of the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board Volunteer hearing aid clinic will be held in Tywyn Baptist Church on Thursday, 3 October, from 10am until noon.

If your hearing aid requires a service, new tubing or domes, or just batteries, go along.

There is no need to make an appointment, as this is a ‘walk-in’ clinic.

History society

THE history of roads and transport links proved a popular theme for the society’s meeting on Monday, 16 September, and there was a record attendance.

Anne Batham gave a well-researched talk on the creation of early local roads, some based on ancient tracks, and the history of later turnpikes and toll booths.

Charles Benedetto gave a lively presentation on the history and continuing activities of the Corris Railway.

Both talks were well received.

After the refreshment break, Liz and Quentin Deakin gave a report back on the society’s summer activities, illustrated by a colourful slide show.

At the next meeting on Monday, 21 October (7pm at the Baptist Church) the society will welcome popular local historian/photographer Jean Napier, who will continue the current theme with a talk on the ancient roads and trackways of Meirionnydd.

All welcome.
