THE last meeting took place on Monday, 13 May in the community hall.
President, Caroline Hotchkiss outlined and reviewed a number of upcoming county events for members, and a good number attended the May Day Garden Party where Pip Chisholm successfully won the competition for the best hat. A team will be taking part in the quiz evening on 14 June and many members are looking forward to the Summer Rally on Saturday, 15 June.
Caroline went on to welcome, the evening’s speaker, Beverley Dimmock, of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds. A number of members, earlier in the year, had requested a speaker from the RSPB as they hope to pay a visit to the reserve later in the year and welcomed an update on the work being undertaken at such a special centre for nature conservation.
Beverley gave an introduction into the foundation and work of the RSPB which was initiated by a woman, Emily Williamson of Manchester, who wished to encourage women to stop using feathers as hat decorations; the fledgling society became so successful that it obtained its Royal Charter in 1904.
It has since advanced the cause of nature conservation for well over 100 years since and is now one of the most influential bodies working in this field.
It’s magazine has recently changed its name to Nature to reflect its wider interest and it works worldwide to promote conservation of the Natural World.
She then went on to talk of local activities at Ynyshir.
The next meeting will be on Wednesday, 3 June, when they will welcome Mair Jones from Llanilar who will be demonstrating the value of chair yoga.
