“OVERWHELMING” kindness has resulted in significant sums of money raised in memory of a toddler who died from a rare lung condition.
Efan Evans was just 20 months old when he lost his battle with a condition known as Surfactant Deficiency Protein C, an infliction which only affects a few people in the UK.
Since his tragic death in 2012, Efan’s family have raised tens of thousands of pounds to help sponsor a room in Ronald McDonald House – Manchester hospital accommodation which allows families to spend nights close to their ailing children in relative comfort and without financial burden.
Last year, Efan’s mother Bethan, along with family and friends, ran the Great Manchester Run and raised nearly £14,000.
The team will be running the event again this year hoping to boost the pot to over £15,000.
The family has also recently held Elusennau Efan’s annual children’s fancy dress disco, which raised a further £400.
Once the total is over £15,000, the family will be able to sponsor Efan’s room for another nine years, allowing distressed families to stay together during times of great difficulty.
Bethan said: “Having a room close to your child when they are terminally poorly in intensive care was a godsend.
“Elan, our daughter, could come and stay at weekends and, in the event of an emergency, I had a telephone at my bedside at night and I could run over to the ward.
“We had access to kitchen and laundry facilities which greatly helped as we were so far from home.
“We will forever be indebted to Ronald McDonald House for giving us a room to stay in and this is our way of thanking them.
“The Evans family would like to express their thanks to their family and friends and community for supporting the fundraising. People’s kindness is overwhelming.”
