A BOW Street councillor has spoken of his increasing worry that people living in local lockdowns in England are free to travel into Wales.
Cllr Paul Hinge is calling for ‘common-sense’ to stop people living in local lockdowns in England from travelling to Wales and says he is being contacted on a daily basis by worried park owners.
In the regions of Wales currently under lockdown, people aren’t allowed to enter or leave without a valid reason, but this is not the case over the border.
Cllr Hinge said: “Here in Ceredigion we are becoming increasingly worried as to the reticence of the Government in Westminster to have a consistent and equitable message regarding travel outside the areas of ‘Local Lockdown’ with the rest of the UK.
“The Welsh Government understand fully that the only way at present to control the rates of infection is to instigate the lockdown restrictions they have and it seems that despite the Westminster Government knowing this, they are unable or unwilling to provide similar restrictions to people living in the lockdown areas in England.
Cllr Paul Hinge added: “I am being contacted on a daily basis by park owners worried that people traveling from ‘hot spot lockdown areas’ in the Midlands and the North West of England to Ceredigion could be bringing this pernicious virus with them.
“They may well not be showing symptoms of the virus but they could still be carriers.”
“Whereas those people who live in South Wales, who are also regular visitors under normal circumstances are not permitted to travel here at present,” which Cllr Hinge says, the park owners he’s spoken with agree with.
He added: “In looking at this situation from a practical standpoint, “we need an equitable pathway that ensures the safety of our residents and holiday makers alike in our areas.
“A local lockdown (as is happening here in Wales) being implemented in all areas of local lockdown be it in England or Wales will suppresses the spread of the virus and done correctly those areas can return to normal relatively quickly.
“Travel outside those areas of lockdown must be restricted to high priority movement which does not include going away on a holiday where you could be taking that pernicious virus with you....from where I’m standing it’s not rocket science just complete common-sense!”
