DWYFOR Meirionnydd MP Liz Saville Roberts has expressed concern about overcrowding on Transport for Wales services.

Mrs Saville Roberts received a photograph of an overcrowded train carriage from a ‘concerned’ constituent who was on the 1.25pm service from Chester to Holyhead on Monday, 28 June.

Mrs Saville Roberts questioned why more wasn’t done to attempt to control the number of passengers and said there was no fresh air and social distancing was “impossible”.

Alexia Course, transport operations director for Transport for Wales, said: “In recent weeks demand for our services has been increasingly high across the network, particularly on weekends.

“We are working hard to meet this demand, while also still operating within the Welsh and UK Government’s guidance for public transport during the pandemic. The guidance recognises there may be certain settings, such as on public transport, where it is not always possible for people to stay two metres apart.”

She said they are implementing as many safety measures as possible, including enhanced cleaning, using every carriage and additional services, and urged passengers to use the Capacity Checker tool to see which services are likely to be particularly busy.
