PENPARCAU residents have been left “ashamed” after visiting family saw the “disgusting” state of their street when the council failed to collect recyclable rubbish over Christmas.

With collections across Ceredigion due a day later in the week starting on Monday, 25 December, residents in Penparcau were expecting their recycling to be collected on Wednesday, 27 December.

But some residents have slammed the council for not collecting recycling after their streets were left looking like “a rubbish tip”.

It has emerged that council refuse collection staff were diverted to grit roads instead.

As of Wednesday, 3 January, the recycling bags had still not been picked up, with reports of a similar situation in other parts of Aberystwyth.

Parc Dinas resident Shaun Williams said the scene on his street was “disgusting”, adding that he felt “ashamed” to have family from Powys visiting him over Christmas.

“It is embarrassing to live up there. It is more like a rubbish tip — there is litter from top to bottom,” said Mr Williams.

“It is in a terrible state. There are young children living in the street, but there are rats up there.

“It is disgusting. My family have been up over Christmas and there is rubbish flying around everywhere. I feel so ashamed.”

Another resident of Parc Dinas, Amanda Connors, asked why the council hadn’t informed residents the bags would not be collected.

“If they had given us warning, we would have been prepared,” she said.

“Even if it was just a post on Facebook, word would have got around and people could have taken the bags in.

“As it happened, nobody knew then they were going to be collected.

“We have had two bad storms over the Christmas holiday, resulting in the streets being badly littered.”
