BARMOUTH councillors have been discussing the future of the town’s annual motocross event.
At last week’s town council meeting, the council debated the best date for the motorcycle event to take place.
The event, which the council admitted “some people love and some people hate”, is usually held around half term in October or November.
Now, following a request from Gwynedd Council’s maritime officer, the council has been asked for its preferred date for the 2019 event.
Deputy mayor Phil Hill was keen to keep the event as “every guest house and every pub is full” when the motocross event is in town and it brings huge amounts of money to the area.
Cllr Trevor Roberts told the council he had received several complaints from residents about the event and “demanded” there was a two hour window of quiet between 10am and 12pm on Remembrance Sunday if the race were to fall on that weekend.
He also said that the motocross event should be held on the weekend of the council’s choosing.
Tom Arnold, who organises the event is said to want to host the event on 2-3 November next year to tie in with half term week.
However, councillors were not thrilled at the prospect and hoped to extend Barmouth’s lucrative summer season for as long as possible beyond half term.
After much discussion, the council agreed that their preferred date was 16-17 November, as proposed by Cllr Roberts.
They also suggested 9-10 November on the proviso Remembrance Sunday was suitably observed.
Mark James conceded it was a difficult act to juggle the motocross, half-term, and Barmouth’s annual fireworks show.
“We would need to have [the race] over three different weekends to please everyone,” he said.
“Everyone wants it different, there is no perfect answer.”
He concluded that the town council was only being asked for their observations and that the final decision would be made by Gwynedd Council.
