AN Aberystwyth man who stole burgers and ostrich fillets from a supermarket paid for vegetables but stole the meat as he couldn’t afford it, he admitted.
Luke Drew, who gave his address as Room 5 in the Night Shelter at 26 Cambrian Street, pleaded guilty to theft from Aberystwyth’s Iceland store on 25 April after he was seen by staff putting items in a rucksack and leaving the store.
Prosecutor Helen Tench said the staff member saw Drew, 27, put a range of items in a basket before he then put some of the items in his bag and then paying for other goods before leaving.
He was asked to return to the store and detained until the police arrived and was arrested.
Drew told officers that he had not been able to afford all of the food he had picked up so had paid for some but took the rest.
Magistrates imposed a six-month conditional discharge on Drew, but ordered him to pay costs of £105.
