COMMUNITIES in Dwyfor and Meirionnydd are being encouraged to have an enjoyable, but safe ‘festive period’ this year as North Wales Police begin their Christmas campaign of increased patrols to reassure locals and visitors alike.
Inspector Gerwyn Thomas at Porthmadog Police Station said: “The Christmas & New Year period often puts additional demands on the Police but officers in the Gwynedd south district will be working hard to ensure everyone stays safe.
“No one wants to be the victim of crime, especially during what should be a time of celebration so plans are in place to reduce crime and disorder, target those who drink and drive or use illegal drugs and protect our communities from harm.
“High visibility patrols will also be increased to provide reassurance ‘on the streets’ whilst passive ‘drugs dogs’ will be deployed into licenced premises.
“Whilst the majority of people drink responsibly, a few spoil it so we’ll be working closely with licences premises to ensure compliance and deter any offending. “We’ll deal quickly and robustly with acts of violence and ASB and offenders will end up behind bars.
“Local and roads policing officers will target drink drivers.
“It is very sad that a small number of motorists still feel they can behave in a totally inconsiderate & careless manner when they take to the roads.
“Those who drink or take drugs and drive are taking their lives and the lives of others into their own hands. Don’t take the risk.
“Our over-riding focus is keeping people safe so we’ll be working with Public Health Wales distributing leaflets outlining the physiological harm that excessive alcohol can cause as well as leaving people totally incapacitated and vulnerable.
“We all want to enjoy ourselves but my message is a very simple one ‘don’t overdo it, look after yourself and each other, and make sure you get home safely.
“In addition to reassurance officers will also provide crime prevention advice. It’s very easy this time of year to leave valuables or recently purchased presents out on display thinking you’ll be back in a few moments or perhaps forget to lock your car or home if you have just ‘popped out’ to visit a relative or friend. Please take some simple steps to deter thieves from taking advantage.
“Gwynedd south is a safe area to live and visit. We have a great track record of working well with our partners and local communities which has contributed to the steady reduction of crime and ASB and by taking a few simple steps or reporting any suspicious behaviour immediately we can all avoid becoming victims of crime and ensure we have a safe, secure and Happy #SaferChristmas.”
