Madam,
I write in relation to the article about flooding fears in Maesmaelor, Penparcau, Aberystwyth, published in the Cambrian News of 26 September.
The headline refers to flooding fears by residents in relation to the ploughing of a field adjacent to Maesmaelor. The field in question belongs to Mr Wilde of Piercefield Farm, and is part of a working farm providing food for the resident livestock..
It is important to note that it is not ploughed fields alone that cause this particular type of flooding, as it is also attributed to adverse weather conditions and the continuation of prolonged periods of rain with excess spring water, such as during 2012 when the previous serious flooding occurred. The anguish and devastation felt by those affected across a number of properties in Maesmaelor during 2012 must not be forgotten.
Upon notification of the problem on 13 October 2012, I visited the site and immediately contacted Mr Wilde of Piercefield Farm, who responded to the situation. He was instrumental in providing the machines and hard core to deflect the rain water running down the path from the top of Pen Dinas.
The efforts of family members, neighbours and myself, who worked for days digging trenches and carrying sand bags to protect the properties being affected, was to prove effective.
Subsequent to the flooding, land drainage was installed behind the affected houses. The work was undertaken and paid for by Mr Wilde.
In addition, Ceredigion County Council also invested substantially in the improvement of the highway surface drainage system in Maesmaelor.
Re: the statement by Cllr Lloyd Edwards, there would seem to be a growing list of local problems that other councillors are getting involved with and taking to the press, without gathering the facts first.
Yours etc, Cllr Steve Davies Aberystwyth Town Council and Ceredigion County Council (Penparcau Ward).
