FEARS have been raised that the controversial Dyfi Bridge proposal could include another death junction “like Dolgellau’s”.
Speaking at a recent Tywyn town council meeting, Cllr Dan Wyre voiced his concern that the current plans for the Dyfi Bridge could potentially lead to “severe injuries or even deaths”.
Under current proposals, traffic coming from the Tywyn direction along the A493, bypassing the by-then obsolete 17th century bridge, will hit a tight bend before attempting to safely join a straight road adjacent to the new Dyfi crossing.
Councillors said they were worried that motorists could build up speed along the new roadway, making it difficult for new vehicles to safely turn onto the road, increasing the likelihood of a smash.
The proposed layout shares similar characteristics to the A470/A494 junction leading away from Dolgellau towards Bala, which has witnessed several serious collisions and two fatalities in the last six years.
Following a passionate campaign by road-safety crusaders and prompting by the North West Wales Coroner Dewi Pritchard-Jones, work finally started earlier this year to install roundabouts at the lethal intersection.
Speaking about the proposed Dyfi Bridge junction, Cllr Wyre said: “Why not install a roundabout now rather than later? It reminds me of the junction at Dolgellau, it clearly looks dangerous.”
