There’s gold in Gwynedd, according to a company which has been searching for the precious metal.

Three miles of Welsh gold has been found in a belt stretching from Barmouth through Dolgellau, Alba Mineral Resources PLC, the company behind a search, has said.

The company said a now-finished sampling programme has found 10 “significant” anomalies – where gold will be found – in the Dolgellau gold belt which stretches up to Snowdonia.

The company said it “represents a huge and unique opportunity” and the area could “rival the historic Clogau-St David’s mine in Bontddu in importance”.

The largest is nearly 2km long, Alba said, and four times as big as the anomaly associated with the main Clogau-St David’s mine, historically the UK’s most prolific gold mine.

That mine has produced 81,000 ounces of gold at a grade of 24 grams of gold per tonne of ore – with the newly found area set to produce even more.

Overall, the company said mineralisation has been found across 9km of the Dolgellau gold belt and it is now “planning trenching work at selected targets” and to extend the Llechfraith mine area.
