ANOTHER war memorial in Tywyn has been desecrated by “disgusting” vandals.

In July the Cambrian News reported how the head of a plastic silhouette of a soldier, depicting a forgotten ‘Tommy’ from the Great War, was snapped off, just days after the poignant memorials were installed across Tywyn.

There are four plastic silhouettes on benches throughout the town and a permanent statue of a six-foot soldier at Bryn-y-Paderau memorial garden, paid for by Tywyn Town Council to commemorate the centenary of the conclusion of the First World War, which cost the lives of millions of soldiers and civilians.

Now another memorial, part of the There but Not There campaign, has been snapped in two, right outside the Tywyn Town Council office on the high street.

The plastic outline was broken on Wednesday night or Thursday morning last week.

Cllr Marisa O’Hara, who was a key figure in getting the silhouettes installed, was outraged.

“Yet again someone has seen fit to break a ‘There But Not There’ statue,” she said.

“To remind people, these have been put around the town to represent the places left behind by the people who made the ultimate sacrifice in the First World War for our freedom. This is the second time one has been broken in our town.

“The police have been speaking to those who did it last time who are believed to be from the Shrewsbury area.”
