I’ve been a member of Aberystwyth University Sports Centre for 12 years, using it four times a week.
The shutdown was a big blow but I was delighted when they reopened having done a wonderful job making it Covidsafe. Certainly, much safer going there than into any supermarket.
My delight was short-lived as it has closed again to non-students after the recent outbreak, a joint decision made by the county council Gold Command and the university.
I suggested to the Sports Centre to have alternate student and non-student days, but was told it was out of their hands. Isn’t the physical and mental wellbeing of the whole community of interest to the council? Obesity is one of the biggest threats to the UK population with the virus being particularly dangerous to the overweight. And how does Ceredigion react to this? They close the sports centres and pools, apparently the only council in Wales to do so. I urge Town & Gown to rethink this policy and look after its locals as well as the students.
