Madam,

Sydney Jones (‘Myth over funding from England resented’, last week’s letters) has made the mistake of thinking that if we public sector people pay tax, we’re paying towards government services. We’re not. We’re just receiving less wages. If you gave me £20, then I gave you £10 back, I wouldn’t have given you anything. You would still have given me £10.

Have a look around Aberystwyth. Who are the big employers? The hospital, the university, the council, the Welsh Government, the National Library. S4C is financed by the UK BBC. Even the farmers are paid by the government/EU. Yes, there are some private sector jobs, but these are just servicing the public sector people (Kwik Fit, Mor-risons, restaurants).Pretending that we are anything other than dependent on kindness of England is just deluding ourselves.

Yours etc, Tony Jones, Blaenplwyf, Aberystwyth.
