GWYNEDD Council has defended its decision to give £50 fines to drivers caught up in weekend’s wild weather.

Traffic wardens were patrolling Pwllheli on Saturday and penalised motorists who had left their vehicles stranded in the snow.

As huge snow drifts encompassed much of the Llyn Peninsula in the storms last week, several drivers returning to their vehicles found a £50 fine notice - which would be reduced to £25 if paid promptly - slapped on their windscreen.

After fury on social media, Gwynedd Council has defended its decision to enforce penalties and released photos of some of the cars the council adjudged to fall foul of the law.

A Gwynedd Council spokesperson said: “Our parking enforcement officers only issue Penalty Charge Notices when there is clear evidence that a motorist has parked in contravention of regulations.

“In periods of severe weather, we consider the local conditions and the ability of motorist to safely drive away.

“Having reviewed photographic evidence from Pwllheli, we believe that there was clear justification for the issuing of PCNs on Saturday.

“Anyone who believes they have been unfairly issued a parking ticket can lodge an appeal by following the advice on their ticket. All appeals are thoroughly assessed on their merits and consideration given to the individual circumstances.”
