STAFF at Machynlleth’s Ysgol Bro Hyddgen will continue strike action after accusing Powys County Council of breaking promises on job security and school funding.

Members of the NASUWT teaching union took strike action on Wednesday, 21 February saying staff felt they had been forced into the strike after a series of job cuts and the threat of further job losses.

A NASUWT spokesperson at the school said staff were “devastated” at having to go on strike, but insisted that the education of pupils was under threat if the school governing body pushed ahead with staff cuts. They also hit out at the council for breaking promises about funding and job security when Ysgol Bro Hyddgen was formed.

A letter sent to parents said: “We have been informed that when the two schools merged to form Ysgol Bro Hyddgen, various promises were made by Powys County Council in terms of funding and job security. These promises have not been honoured."
