A FORMER Ysgol y Gader pupil is leading the line as the region looks to train up a new generation of rugby players.

In April, Carwyn Lewis was appointed as Rugby Hub Officer for his old comprehensive school.

Carwyn will be working with the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU), Coleg Llandrillo and Dolgellau RFC who have all co-funded a project to increase the opportunities for children, youths and adults to play rugby in Meirionnydd.

As part of his work at Ysgol Y Gader, Carwyn also hopes to include pupils from the catchment’s primary schools setting a firm basis for rugby within Ysgol Bro Idris in September 2017.

The former pupil is a Class 2 Rugby Coach and has previously worked as the strength and conditioning coach for Cricket Wales.

“It’s great to be back at Ysgol y Gader providing the opportunity for children and adults to take part in playing rugby be it touch, TAG, 7s or the full 15 a-side - it’s a wonderful game,” said Carwyn.

“There’s always been a lot of talent in Ysgol y Gader, strong, natural athletes.

“It’s a privilege to work with them, developing them as young people and players”.
