The Welsh Government has responded to the leader of Llais Gwynedd’s call for Welsh pupils to learn their own country’s history before any others.
At a full Gwynedd Council meeting in December, Cllr Owain Williams, who represents Clynnog, called for the Welsh Government to prioritise Welsh history in the school curriculum.
The Welsh Government has responded by asserting its “commitment to the importance of Welsh history in the curriculum”.
Cllr Williams said the local authority should call for Welsh history to be given priority in history lessons in all schools in Wales.
“The current situation of basic failings in teaching our own history and identity is unacceptable,” he said. “We therefore call upon Welsh Government to take the necessary steps to correct this failing without delay.”
Gwynedd Council put Cllr Williams’ concerns to the Welsh Government in a letter.
Responding to the concerns at the full council last week on St David’s Day, Kirsty Williams, cabinet secretary for education, wrote: “The Welsh Government believes it is essential for pupils in Wales to have the opportunity to learn about the history of our country.
"The Welsh Government has committed to treat Welsh and English equally.”
