Montgeemryshire MP Glyn Davies will stand down at the next election, he has announced.
Mr Davies wrote to members of the Montgomeryshire Conservative Association last Monday, saying it was “a tough and quite emotional decision”.
Mr Davies has been the MP for Montgomeryshire since 2010.
The 75-year-old served as an AM in the Welsh Assembly for the Mid and West Wales region from 1999 to 2007.
Before that he was chairman of Montgomeryshire District Council from 1985 to 1989, having previously served as chair of the Planning Committee and chair of the Finance Committee.
In his time in Westminster Mr Davies served as parliamentary private secretary under two Welsh Secretaries.
“I’ve fought and won the last three elections with majorities of around 1,000, 5,000, and nearly 10,000,” he said.
“Montgomeryshire is now the safest Conservative seat in Wales. But it will be time to go in 2022 - if this Parliament lasts that long.
“It’s been a great job to do, but there is quite a bit of stress involved in contesting elections.
“As with my rugby career, it is important to know when to hang up my boots.”
