A STATE-OF-THE-ART classroom built specifically to encourage schoolchildren to improve their scientific skills has been opened.
Ysgol O M Edwards has been developing a new STEM room – science, technology, engineering and mathematics – and had an official opening ceremony recently.
Arwyn Thomas, head of GwE, an effectiveness and improvement service for north Wales schools, cut the ribbon of the new facility, joined by Cllr Alan Jones Evans and headteacher Dilys Ellis-Jones.
The headteacher was excited about the opportunities the new room would present.
“The school has developed this new area to develop interest within the pupils of the importance of the sciences and engineering and to promote these subject with girls especially,” she said.
“The new curriculum wants children to become more creative and to have time to develop these skills for different kinds of work that will be in the future.
“Many job opportunities will develop with these skills set needed and tackling them at this young age will inspire them to think of work ‘outside the box’.
“The school has been working with the project Bridges to Schools with Emrys Roberts, designing and seeing the new bridge being put up in Llanuwchllyn.
“They have been designing and building bridges themselves, as well as visiting The Menai Suspension Bridge, and looking at bridges around the world.
“The younger pupils have also been using robotics and working on their coding skill and parents were invited to the open evening to try our some of the activities using ITC and robotic work.”
