ABERYSTWYTH University’s council has warned that £32 million of funding is “now in question” as the implications of the UK’s decision to leave the European Union become clearer.
The university has also warned that it is unclear how the move to leave the EU will affect student numbers in the future, and has set up a Europe Working Group to monitor issues as the country prepares to trigger Article 50.
While over 350 EU students joined the university this September after a Welsh Government commitment to subsidise tuition fees at current levels for the duration of their courses, the university said that “uncertainty remains over whether such a commitment would be made by the government to subsequent EU student intakes”.
The council said that 23 per cent of Aberystwyth University’s research income comes from EU sources, and that £32m of funding before 2020, including bids being developed, are now in doubt.
“£37m of EU research funding has already been committed to Aberystwyth University over future years, £14m of which was due to be received after 2020,” the council said.
“The future of such funding is now in question, as are bids for a further £18m in EU funding which are currently being developed."
