A number of pupils at Ysgol Gyfun Aberaeron will finish early for Christmas after they were asked to self-isolate for 14 days following the confirmation of a Covid-19 case at the school.

Classes 7T, 8T, 9C, Year 9 ‘green’ group for English, 11 Llethu and Year 11 Set 2 Science “will be closed for 14 days and therefore until the end of term”, Ysgol Gyfun Aberaeron said.

The pupils have been asked to self-isolate due to being close contacts of a confirmed Covid-19 case at the school.

These pupils and staff must remain at home for 14 days to reduce the possible spread of the virus to family, friends and the wider community.

The school said that “due to the way the school currently runs, other school classes can remain open”.

Those asked to self-isolate will be taught remotely.

In a letter to parents, headteacher Owain Jones said: “These are extremely worrying and challenging times for us all.

“However, I would like to assure you that we are working very closely with the education authority to act in accordance with Welsh Government and Public Health Wales guidance.”

All close contacts at the school have been identified, and all parents have been informed, the council said.
