ABERAERON Primary School is full to its capacity and in urgent need of an extension, according to a local councillor.

County councillor Elizabeth Evans told colleagues on the town council that the school in Wellington Gardens had become a victim of its own success.

“It’s way over capacity – they are having to use all their rooms - it’s a great school with a great headmistress,” she said.

“During the recent Cabinet meeting where the extensions to two schools in the north of the county were discussed, I asked the Cabinet along with the head of learning services to factor in to their capital works programme, the long-promised and much-needed extension to Ysgol Gynradd Aberaeron.”

Speaking after the meeting, Cllr Evans explained her request to Cabinet came in the context of their decision to grant funding for extensions to two primary schools in the north of the county because of capacity issues.

“The justification for the extensions were that they had one portable cabin and staff were having to teach in the staff room and school halls, which exactly mirrors the situation in Aberaeron Primary School, except we have two portable cabins,” she said.

“The provision of education in Dyffryn Aeron is to be reviewed shortly and this cannot be done in isolation without addressing the capacity at Ysgol Gynradd Aberaeron."
