Aberystwyth University should “honour its promise” to reopen a popular bar and social club on campus, a university club committee has said.

Brynamlwg, which had served the university community as a bar and headquarters for sports and social clubs since the 1970s, shut last year as part of an £11.4m savings exercise.

The university told the Cambrian News this week that the building could get a new lease of life, saying it is “considering the future use” of the building.

The building was refurbished in 2016 and relaunched to much fanfare, but the university said that “leisure patterns are changing and there has been a decline in demand in recent years”, forcing its closure.

Gwyn Moseley, chair of the Aberystwyth University Sports and Social Club (AUSSC) committee said the university had broken a promise to reopen the building with a private tenant, and has called on the university to act.

“It is now just over a year since the university management closed Brynamlwg,” he said.

“Their promise, at the time, was to get a valuation of the lease and offer it for private tender to ensure its continuation as a recreational and social facility for staff.

“Since then they have kept Brynamlwg closed and not replied to our request for a meeting to discuss the lack of progress."

An Aberystwyth University spokesperson told the Cambrian News: “The university is currently considering the future use of Brynamlwg as part of a review of the development of the Penglais campus and the facilities available for students, staff and visitors.

“In the meantime, the university has offered alternative accommodation for the activities of the Aberystwyth University Sports and Social Club.”
