Because of the Capitol Hill riot, I have offered my empathy to the American parents of my son-in-law. His father admires Winston Churchill, and asks me what would Churchill do in the current crisis.

As a child I played on the Channel Sea defences in Dorset, and as an adult I get emotional just recalling how incredibly lucky we were to prevent invasion. It would be churlish of me not to recognise that Churchill was destined for his war timerole.

However, he and his party misread the political mood, and lost office after the war because of the social circumstances of the masses. There is an eerie parallel with our present crisis, of a government playing ‘catch-up’, particularly in air raid defences.

Now, 80 years later, Britain, out of 27 nations, has the second lowest number of hospital beds in the EU. Whilst our medical staff are pushed to the limit, and beyond, this Tory government continues to imbed privatisation into the NHS with billions spent on an ineffective test and trace system, that could otherwise greatly ease that pressure.

I have recently been de registered by my dental practice, with no NHS vacancies in the area, but plenty of private. Medical cover is going the same way, unless the electorate wakes up, as it did post-war.
