YSGOL Uwchradd Tywyn has held its 20th annual young chef competition.
With only three pupils studying food technology, likely candidates for this year’s culinary competition looked limited, but that didn’t dampen the enthusiasm and talent of the five competitors who took part.
The challenge was to prepare two courses in two-and-a-half-hours from any country of their choice, with Italy being the most popular as usual, but others drawing inspiration from Greek and Thai cuisine.
The judge for the evening was Shaun Jones, who had moved to Tywyn to run Monfa Guest House after many years of cooking in restaurants in the midlands and London, including the prestigious Savoy.
He studied catering at college in London, and received training from celebrity chef Marco Pierre White.
Prizes were awarded by Rotary Club president, Anthony Pearson.
The winner was Ellen Hughes, who came in second place last year, who prepared stuffed chicken breast wrapped in pancetta followed by tiramisu.
This year’s runner up was Mya Rees, who made bruschetta followed by vegetable lasagne.
