I am not, I know, the only person who has spent some time thinking about what good or evil may result from our current crisis.

May I suggest that one highly desirable outcome would be an extension of the date of our departure, after the transition period, from the EU.

While my own preference would be for Brexit to be cancelled altogether, nobody can deny that even Boris Johnson wished there to be a trade deal in place - even if only of a fairly simple format - by the end of transition. Nobody, I believe, can expect that, while so much resource (of time, money and mental effort) is needed to deal with the coronavirus pandemic, it is simultaneously possible to discuss and agree a trade deal and that applies to both the UK and the EU.

The UK government must approach the EU for an extension by the end of June if an extension is to happen - not much time, given the possible effects of the virus on those responsible for the negotiations.

So I ask readers to speak to anybody they know who may have some influence on the matter, and to make it clear that - no matter what party, if any, they voted for - they are extremely concerned about the effect of a ‘No Deal by Default’ Brexit.
