LAMPETER town councillors are set to take on the cost of financing the town’s floral displays from Ceredigion County Council this spring.

Members have agreed in principal to assume responsibility for the maintenance and costs of planters, flower beds and hanging baskets offloaded by the local authority as part of their continuing cost-cutting drive.

Town mayor Cllr David Smith said he and his colleagues felt they had been left with no alternative.

“It was either that or having no floral displays at all here in Lampeter,” he told the Cambrian News. “Whatever costs met by Ceredigion County Council last year will now be met by us.

“These floral displays are very important to a town like Lampeter. We’re always getting positive comments from visitors on how attractive the place looks.”

Councillors – who anticipate the annual costs will run into five figures – have now put plans out to tender.

The move follows a meeting with Jon Hadlow, County Hall’s ground maintenance manager, back in December when it was provisionally agreed the local authority would deliver planters, hanging baskets and terracotta tubs to an agreed location once the town council had gained a licence for the siting of such items on the public highway.
