WELSH footballing hero Chris Coleman has taken on a muddy Teifi assault course as he aims to learn the Welsh language.

Chris Coleman became a national hero leading the Welsh team to the semi-finals of the Euros in 2016 in France. Now, the former Swansea and Crystal Palace defender is going on a completely different journey – to learn Welsh and perhaps realise a dream too in the Iaith ar Daith (Welsh Road-trip) series on S4C, tonight (Sunday).

To help Chris reach his goal and to set him several challenges along the way will be the presenter and former international football player Owain Tudur Jones.

The journey begins on the old Vetch field in Swansea where Chris began his career as a football player – and from there the two travel to Newcastle Emlyn for a bit of team bonding on an assault course, where Chris has an opportunity to immerse himself in the language – and the mud!

On to Beddgelert and Chris learns more about the Draig Goch (Red Dragon) – a symbol which has been so important to him over the years – from none other than the Archdruid Myrddin ap Dafydd.

Chris said: “I remember doing interviews as a player for Wales and I always wished I could do it in Welsh,” said Chris.

He added: “Then being the manager of Wales, I did a lot of interviews in English – there was always a twinge of guilt that I couldn’t speak in Welsh and address the Welsh speakers. It’s always been there at the back of my mind ‘...maybe one day I will learn Welsh...’.”

Will Chris be able to realise his dream by the end of the programme?

Chris said at the beginning of his time on Iaith ar Daith: “I am hoping this journey will be the same as my journey as Welsh manager, where I didn’t start off so well, but I stuck at it and in the end we did OK.”

Owain said: “Chris managed me when I was a member of the Wales team – his inspiration in the changing room was so important. But he’s not the manager this time – I’m in charge, I am the boss!”

Chris faced several challenges during his time on Iaith ar Daith in order to test his language skills – and the biggest challenge of all was to be interviewed in Welsh for the new series of FFIT Cymru. Will he succeed? Will he reach his goal or will he be shown the red card?

Join Chris Coleman on his journey to learn Welsh with Owain Tudur Jones tonight (Sunday) at 8pm on S4C.
