Organisers of a charity football tournament in Porthmadog earlier this month have handed a cheque to a local rescue team.

A tournament was held at the beginning of May in memory of popular chef Kristian Ley Roberts, who died in September 2016 while cycling home from work in Portmeirion.

The married father-of-two was found unconscious on the roadside of the A487, between Minffordd and Penrhyndeudraeth.

He is believed to have died of natural causes despite being in “excellent” physical health.

This is the second year running that a tournament has been held in his memory. It saw 18 teams compete on Porthmadog FC’s Traeth ground over the bank holiday weekend.

Players and supporters raised a total of £1,114, including £400 by Gay Jones of Tesco Porthmadog.

A cheque was presented by Kristian’s parents, Stan and Gaynor Roberts, to the Aberglaslyn Mountain Rescue Team.

Stan said: “I just want to thank the people of Port for their support for this event.

“It means so much that people keep attending and are so generous with their backing.

“It’s a great way to remember Kristian.

“The family is just so grateful.

“We will be doing exactly the same again next year.”
