A LLANIDLOES man has received a visit from the Chairman of Powys council on his 100th birthday.Fred Davies, of Llangurig Road, celebrated his birthday on Monday, 20 June, and received a visit from Cllr Keith Tampin, chairman of the council and Cllr Kath Roberts-Jones, chairman of Montgomeryshire to mark the special occasion.

Born in Birkenhead, Mr Davies served with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers in Burma during World War Two. He and his wife lived in Knighton and Llanidloes.

He was elected mayor of Llanidloes in 2006 a month before his 90th birthday, and was thought to be the oldest mayor in Wales at the time. The occasion was marked with a celebration at the Angel Hotel, attended by his daughter, friends and civic leaders. Llanidloes Rotary Club was honoured to share in the celebrations. Fred is a steadfast member of the club and is now the Rotary Club’s oldest ever serving member. The Rotary Club, members of the Inner Wheel and guests were treated to a talk from Fred on his adventures of the last century. The evening was rounded off with birthday cake and a chance to see the birthday card from the Queen, who herself has just turned 90.
