TWO friends from Newcastle Emlyn have taken part in their first walking half-marathon, raising nearly £1,000 for charity.

Shelagh McDonald and Pamela Atterbury were two of the 7,000 people from all over the UK who took part in the Shinewalk for Cancer Research - an event which takes place at night around the streets of London,

“We signed up at the start of the year when my auntie, Brenda McDonald, was undergoing treatment for breast cancer,” said Shelagh, who would like to thank everyone for their generosity.

“She sadly passed away in June this year and I wanted to do something to help raise vital funds and awareness of this very cruel disease, and to make my aunt proud.

“As soon as I’d mentioned it to my friend Pam, she also signed herself for the event.

“We’ve been fitting in as much training as possible for the event. To date, we have raised nearly £1,000.”
