Lampeter will be lit up for Christmas this year, despite fears that the usual tree and lights would not be put up amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

While Christmas this year will look and feel different from previous years for many people due to Covid-19, Lampeter will look its festive best again, with the full set of street lights and the big Christmas tree on the square being put in place during the next fortnight.

As the pandemic continued, it was mooted that the town’s Chamber of Trade would not be able to install the Christmas lights, and Lampeter Round Table unable to put up the Christmas trees.

Ongoing talks over the last few weeks however, have seen plans changed, and Lampeter will once again have a full Christmas display.

New town mayor Cllr Selwyn Walters said it was “wonderful news.”

“Lampeter will be filled with the Christmas spirit, which should benefit us all in these uncertain times,” Cllr Walters said.

“It’s all down to a group of volunteers from the Chamber of Trade who put up the lights every year, not just this year.

“We are all very thankful for the work they do.”

Premises in the town can also have trees installed, after the town council agreed to pay for a contractor to put up Christmas trees in shops and businesses.

All premises in the town with holders are being urged to book their Christmas trees with Robert’s Garden Centre as soon possible.

“Can I also encourage all the shop-keepers to buy into this spirit by decorating their premises with the trees if they have the holders,” Cllr Walters added.

“Lampeter has everything you need, so let’s look forward to a happy and prosperous Christmas.”

Cllr Rob Phillips, who handed over as mayor to Cllr Walters at the start of November said the council had been involved in “ongoing discussions with the Chamber of Trade” on the Christmas display.

“The good news is that there will be lights - which everyone is very pleased about,” Cllr Phillips said.
