ABERYSTWYTH Silver Band is trumpeting the 90th anniversary of its historic band room.

Built in 1926, the band room, located in the car park of what is now the Ystwyth retail park on Park Avenue, has been a permanent home to band members who gathered at rehearsals on Tuesday to celebrate the milestone.

A history of the band, which has had 26 permanent conductors, by its historian Peter Henley outlines the impact the band has had on the town.

Before moving into its new band room in 1926, the town band relied on the use of a rehearsal room in the enclosed skating rink next to Capel y Morfa opposite the former town hall, now Ceredigion Library.

The band suffered regular complaints following their rehearsals.

The decision was made by the Aberystwyth Borough Council to build the new band hall, while funds were raised by residents towards the purchase of a complete set of instruments and percussion for the players.

At the outset of the Second World War in 1939, the band was disbanded and the instruments put in storage.

The band room was taken over by the Home Guard and the auxiliary fire service until the end of the war.

The band reclaimed their instruments and their rehearsal room in the late 1940s.
