My daily exercise during the last few months has been a walk round the castle grounds and I have taken more notice of the gravestones.

One in particular caught my attention partly because of the unusual name. It was dedicated to Susanna, eldest daughter of Edward Locki, who describes himself as the Collector of Customs.

He was clearly a man of good education as the poem he wrote in his daughter’s memory shows:

Early removed from black misfortune’s power; Secure from storms here rests a tender flower; Here Susan sleeps. High Heaven’s all gracious King; Hath to eternal summer changed her spring.

When the last trump is heard, when mortals rise; When souls to bodies join with glad surprise.

I can’t make out the date but assume it is mid 19th century. I would like to know more about the family.
