An organisation that is seeking to honour soldiers who served in the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War is hoping to establish if a Machynlleth man is buried alongside his parents in a Penegoes churchyard.

The Far From Home project works on remembering those who served with the CEF and wants to learn if Lance Corporal Thomas Owen Davies, who was born in Penegoes, is buried at St Cadfarch Church in the village.

L/Cpl Davies was born in April 1891 in Penegoes, but also lived in Machynlleth and Aberystwyth before emigrating to Canada and joining the Canadian army in April 1915.

He passed away in 1921 after returning to Machynlleth when he was discharged from the army on health grounds in July 1918 after a spell of ill health led to him being hospitalised.

While it is believed that L/Cpl Davies is buried alongside his parents at St Cadfarch Church, burial registers are missing meaning the Far From Home project cannot provide proof to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission that the churchyard is his final resting place, which the group wants to commemorate.

As part of the group’s attempt to show that L/Cpl Davies is buried at the churchyard, they are appealing for help from local residents to provide photographic evidence that the family is buried there.

Anyone who could help provide the information requested, can email the Far From Home project through Adrian Watkinson on [email protected].
