A MUCH-LOVED former Aberystwyth councillor is “on the mend” after undergoing life-saving brain surgery in Cardiff on Friday.
Goronwy Edwards MBE, or ‘Groxy’ as he is affectionately known, was rushed to Bronglais Hospital by ambulance on Friday, where medical staff determined he would require immediate surgery to save his life due to a build-up of blood on the brain.
Goronwy was a councillor for Penparcau at both county and town council level for 44 years, after standing as a Labour candidate in a 1968 by-election at the age of 34, and only retired from politics in May 2012, at the age of 78.
After being taken by ambulance to the University Hospital of Wales in the Heath, Cardiff, neurosurgeons operated on Goronwy for two hours.
Speaking to the Cambrian News this week, Goronwy’s son Simon described the “stressful” experience not knowing whether his dad would pull through.
“He got rushed to Bronglais by ambulance on Friday and they assessed him very quickly,” Simon said. “The doctors were very concerned, which was very, very stressful for the whole family, as you can imagine.
“They decided to transfer him to the Heath and they operated on him that night. There was a large amount of blood between the brain and skull, and some dead blood.”
