For the second year running Gwynedd and Anglesey band Gwilym were the main winners at the annual Welsh Music Awards event, Gwobrau’r Selar, in Aberystwyth.
Gwobrau’r Selar is an annual event, celebrating the success of the Welsh language music scene.
For the eighth year running, a series of events took place before the main event on Friday, 15 February, when a total of 13 prizes were awarded.
The celebrations began on Thursday, 13 February with an evening to celebrate Gruff Rhys who received the Special Contribution award.
Aberystwyth Students Union was the venue for the main event with two nights of live music featuring some of the most exciting and popular Welsh acts of 2019.
Gwilym and Fleur de Lys were the headlining acts on Friday night, but there were also fantastic performances by up and coming acts Lewys, Elis Derby and Dienw.
Saturday’s lineup was more alternative, with Carmarthen’s slacker outfit, Los Blancos, who have made huge waves over the last year, closing the show. Main support was Caernarfon’s unique and slightly crazy hip-hop collective, 3 Hwr Doeth. The other performers were electronic act Eädyth, indie three-piece, Papur Wal, and the winners of this year’s Best Breakthrough Act award, Kim Hon.
Gwilym picked up a record five awards at last year’s Gwobrau’r Selar, and they added another three to their collection over the weekend - Best Song for \Neidia/, Best Music Video for Gwalia and of course the highly sought after title of Best Band.
Fleur De Lys picked up the prize for Best Album for their debut LP O Mi Awn am Dro, with Papur Wal winning the Best EP award for Lle yn y Byd Mae Hyn?.
Elis Derby was named Best Solo Artist 2019, with Cardiff based festival, Tafwyl, winning Best Live Event, the capital city’s music venue Clwb Ifor Bach named as Best Independent Promoters.
