CAMPAIGNERS fighting to save Penparcau’s Bodlondeb care home have urged Ceredigion Council to abandon closure plans and go back to the drawing board.

The Save Bodlondeb campaign group called a public meeting, just days after a march in support of keeping the home open had attracted around 200 supporters, where the council was criticised for launching a consultation on the closure of the home without drawing up any alternative options.

The campaign group have already questioned the council’s insistence that the home is not financially viable and does not meet room size regulations with campaigners saying that allowing more residents into the home would address the financial issues and that the regulations on room sizes will not be applied retrospectively.

Former Ceredigion MP Mark Williams, the chair of the campaign group’s steering committee, insisted that a consultation into Bodlondeb’s closure should not have begun without any possible alternative and he also told the meeting that he was concerned that council reports into Bodlondeb seemed to suggest that the closure was inevitable.

Mr Williams said it was important for the council to explain why reports had been produced “on the assumption that Bodlondeb has closed”, and also called for assurances that the council had not entered into any talks about a possible sale of the site.
